HIGHLANDS TENNIS ASSOCIATION
GUIDELINES FOR ORGANIZED TENNIS
Participation in Organized Tennis is limited to Association members
and guests.
The Men’s and Women’s Organized Tennis Coordinators match players
of approximately equal playing ability and assign players to courts at
specific times on specific days. Organized
Tennis is normally scheduled October through May when the largest number of
players are present in the community.
Organized Tennis for Men is scheduled on Tuesday,
Thursday and Saturday. Organized
Tennis for Women is scheduled on Monday and Wednesday. On Friday, women
have two courts per session reserved for self-organized tennis where
players organize their own match and may sign up for a court. Also on
Friday, women have two courts per session reserved for social tennis where
players may show up at the courts with no sign-ups required. The format for
social tennis play is established by the players.
Starting times are designated by the Organized Tennis
Coordinators.
Organized play is scheduled in two-hour increments with two (2)
sessions scheduled each day. Additional sessions may be scheduled as
needed. Play consists of standard
sets with a tie break played at the players’ discretion. Match results are not officially
tabulated.
Matches are scheduled utilizing the following
procedures:
Sign-up sheets are posted on the bulletin board
seven (7) days prior to matches.
Sign-up sheets are collected at approximately noon on the day before scheduled
matches. A player who cancels before
the posted sheet is collected must cross out his/her name and no other
player may take that position on the list.
The first 32 players to sign up have priority for
match scheduling. The Coordinator will make every effort to schedule four
players on each court. The order of
sign-up does not guarantee being included in a match. The Organized Tennis Coordinators will
have the final say in all matters related to scheduling.
Coordinators will schedule matches with players
that have the same USTA rating. If
it is not possible to group players with the same ratings, then players
with a .5 rating difference will be assigned. Normally, a player will not
be matched with players more than a .5 rating level above or below. (For example, a 3.5 rated player could be
matched with a 4.0 or a
3.0, but not a 2.5). Players should
discuss their rating level with the Organized Tennis Coordinator.
Men or Women may be substitutes on the opposite
gender’s tennis days if there are insufficient players available to
complete the schedule.
Match and court assignments are posted on the
bulletin board by approximately 6:00 PM the day before scheduled
play.
If a player must cancel after the scheduled
matches are posted, it is the responsibility of that player to find a
comparable substitute. If no substitute can be found, the canceling player
must notify the other assigned players that the match is canceled.
Assigned courts that remain vacant 10 minutes
after the scheduled starting time will be available for Open Tennis.
